We’ll teach you everything you need to know to safely skipper a sailing yacht as a bareboat-certified captain or competent crewmember.

Note: We put together individual students for all of our courses.

You don’t have to have you own group. Our hands-on approach to instruction cultivates the potential in each student. After you master the fundamentals of sailing you’ll open the door to the new and exciting world of the sailing lifestyle!

Basic Sailing & Seamanship

This two-day course will teach you the fundamentals of sailing and seamanship. A total of 12 hours of on-board instruction will provide you with the skills and confidence you need to safely skipper and crew a 22′ to 27′ tiller sailboat in light to moderate wind and sea conditions on lakes or other protected bodies of water. All instruction is on-board our 27-30 foot keelboats. You’ll be sailing on the Monterey Bay both days. During course time on the water, you are likely to be treated to encounters with dolphins, otters, seals, pelicans, and possibly whales. This course prepares students for Basic Coastal Cruising course and comprises the first 2 days of the Six or Eight-Day program.

What to bring:

We’d recommend wearing soft-soled, comfortable shoes, a warm jacket, fleece or sweater, and a windbreaker. Layered clothing is the best way to dress. You can store an extra jacket or sweater in the boat’s cabin. To protect yourself from the sun- a billed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses and sunscreen. Gloves provide easier holding of lines and help prevent chafe. They don’t have to be “sailing gloves”-bicycling, golf, weight-training, even garden gloves will work. Pacific Yachting and Sailing provides comfortable lifejackets and foul weather gear if needed.

Schedule:

Weather permitting, we offer this course every weekend throughout the year and you can join the first two days of an 8 day course on a Monday-Tuesday. Check our calendar for upcoming classes.

Parking:

Students can purchase the Santa Cruz Port all day meter parking permits from our office upon arrival for $5.00.

Motion sickness is rarely an issue on sailboats, however, we recommend sea-bands for preventive measures if you feel you may be susceptible. The Sea-Band is a knitted elasticized wrist band, which operates by applying pressure on the Nei Kuan acupressure point on each wrist by means of a plastic stud. Because the bands do not use drugs, they do not cause any of the side effects associated with anti-nausea drugs. http://www.sea-band.com/seaband.htm It’s a good idea to pack a lunch. There are several good eateries within walking distance. However, you may be rushed returning to class by the end of the 1/2-hour lunch break. We’ll look forward to having you here. Please don’t hesitate to e-mail or call us if you have any questions.

PacificSailingPic12Coastal Cruising Made Easy, ASA Certification: Basic Coastal Cruising Schedule: Every Weekend

Note – Because all students have different abilities in the learning process, we honestly can’t guarantee that you’ll pass our certification or the American Sailing Association’s certification requirements. Most students that have a strong & serious commitment to become an excellent sailor do just fine, passing all of the written & practical requirements. We can guarantee that you will get some of the best instruction in the world by or USCG Licensed instructors.

Our captains go beyond their job requirements to teach and convey the sport of sailing in a very safe & comfortable way. Our skippers truly love & enjoy what they’re doing and it shows. Most students that complete 3 week-ends- Basic Sailing & Seamanship, Basic Coastal Cruising & Intermediate Coastal Cruising, need a 4 hr review & 2 hr check-out ( we have once a week) to satisfy the ASA practical requirements for the Basic Coastal Cruising level certification. In other words, it’s likely you will be able to take out a boat as a bareboat skipper, with experienced crew, after 7 days. Most students that take the 6 day course consecutively can usually pass the ASA practical requirements up to Basic Coastal Cruising in course time. Most students that take the 8 day course consecutively can usually pass the ASA practical requirements up to Intermediate Bareboat in course time. Bareboat Chartering This course prepares the student to charter a larger wheel steered auxiliary powered sailboat, sailing by day in coastal waters in moderate to strong wind and sea conditions. You will continue to build and review on the skills learned in the Basic Sailing & Seamanship, Basic Coastal Cruising and Intermediate Coastal Cruising courses.

Students who exhibit the requisite sailing and boat handling skills will be certified to the ASA Bareboat certification during course time. In most cases, when a student has completed eight consecutive days (or 4 week-ends), and they have done exceptionally well, passing all of the practical requirements to Bareboat Charter, our USCG Licensed Captain can and will certify them to the ASA Bareboat levels without a review /check-out. Certified sailors are required to have crew that is competent to the Basic Coastal Cruising level of experience to charter a boat from Pacific Yachting & Sailing. If students go through 8 days of instruction and they don’t pass the practical check out they can take a one day review/ check out to pass the Bareboat Charter qualifications. Completion of this class prepares you to take the ASA Bareboat Chartering Certification. This is a good course for those interested in chartering the Pacific Yachting Sailboats as well as in many tropical locations that we can help arrange for you.

ASA Certification: Bareboat Chartering

Once a student passes the practical Bareboat requirements they can charter a boat here at Pacific Yachting. We recommend taking the three ASA written exams ( Basic Sailing & Seamanship, Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering) after becoming Bareboat certified. The Bareboat Chartering class is excellent preparation for our Advanced Coastal Cruising & Piloting course and comprises days 7 and 8 of the Eight-Day program.

Topics covered:

• Navigation rules

• Roller Furling

• Cruise Planning

• Emergency Tiller Use

• Reefing • Steering a Compass Course

You will experience six days of sailing instruction on the Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean. Please read the Questions and Answers below to describe the difference between our six and eight day courses. The course structure is the same as our weekend group classes, but you’ll have the chance to live the real sailing lifestyle after class each day. Pacific Yachting & Sailing offers you the free option of living onboard one of our sailboats after your course time.

Our Six-Day courses accommodate a maximum of four students (two students, minimum). Come as a couple and close the class at two for an additional charge. The boat you’ll be staying on is moored at our docks. The accommodations are simple but adequate. All of the yachts have sleeping berths, galleys (kitchens) with cooking stoves and iceboxes, and heads (bathrooms). Additional bathrooms with showers are close by the docks. Due to the variety of excellent eating establishments within a short walking distance, most students do not cook onboard, however it is permitted. If you do wish to cook aboard, cooking utensils can be supplied at an extra cost if requested. Bedding will also be provided at an extra cost, if requested. We recommend that you arrange to stay at a local inn or hotel the evening prior to the start of your course. There are many local restaurants, grocery stores, a state beach and even a museum all within easy walking distance of your boat.

Completion of the Six-Day Course prepares you to take the ASA Basic Keelboat & Basic Coastal Cruising Certification. When a student has completed six consecutive days, and they have done exceptionally well, our USCG Licensed Captain can certify them to the ASA Basic Coastal Cruising level.

Note: Pacific Yachting requires that sailors have the Bareboat Level to charter our boats. The Six-Day Program includes days Basic Sailing & Seamanship 1 & 2 Basic Coastal Cruising 3 & 4 Intermediate Coastal Cruising 5 & 6

Students can optionally follow through the Eight-Day Bareboat Course as long as there are at least 2-3 participants. Students registered for private (2-students/consecutive) instruction may start the Six-Day Program on a date of their choosing.

Q: What is the difference between the Six-Day and the Eight-Day Courses?

A: The Six-Day Course is designed so that a student with a dedicated desire can become proficient in sailing a 27-34 foot sailboat. Completion of the Six-Day Course prepares students to take the ASA Basic Coastal Cruising. This is the level of certification required by many charter companies to bareboat charter, however we recommend following through 8 days total, completing the extra 2 day Bareboat Course to refine all of your skills to near perfection. All charter companies have different requirements to Bareboat Charter (you are the captain with a competent crew). Many companies will require a 2 hour practical check-out no matter what certification you have. Women’s Classes

Note: Currently Pacific Yachting is only conducting Woman Only Sailing courses bases on 2-3 students that have their own group. Since 1979, Pacific Yachting and Sailing in Santa Cruz has introduced thousands of students and accomplished sailors to the excitement and pleasures of sailing on Monterey Bay and the Pacific ocean.
