About Us
Mountain Adventure Seminars (MAS) is a year-round California mountaineering school and guide service based in Bear Valley, California. MAS is owned and operated by Aaron & Kimi Johnson and is a reflection of their love for the outdoors and enthusiasm for playing, sharing and educating in “wild places”. MAS has been operating since 1996 and is excited to be celebrating 15 years of fun and service.

MAS operates a wide range of programs in Northern California. Rock climbing is the emphasis during the summer. Winter storms signal the beginning of our telemark ski school, avalanche education, and backcountry ski/snowboard and snowshoe adventures. When the days start to get longer again, we begin mountaineering programs which last from early spring to mid-summer at which time the rock climbing in California programs are already in full swing. It’s a busy lifestyle with many changes, but somebody has got to do it. We hope to see you out there.

Rock Climbing

MAS Outdoor Rock Climbing School offers one of California’s most comprehensive and exciting climbing programs. MAS blends educational workshops and climbing adventures to maximize your outdoor rock climbing experiences. Through regularly scheduled courses, privates and groups, MAS can help you reach the top.
MAS rock climbing classes are fun, paced and provide a supportive environment to learn, share and explore the exciting sport of outdoor Northern California rock climbing. MAS is an Accredited Program with the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) which is the highest standard for a rock climbing school in the USA and is recognized internationally.

MAS offers a wide variety of courses designed to meet the needs of both novice and experienced climbers. MAS rock climbing programs are divided into several categories:
• Workshops (1 Day Educational Programs)
• Seminars (2 Day Educational Programs)
• Adventures (1 Day Experiences)
• Multi-Pitch Camps (1-3 Day Experiences)

MAS offers rock climbing programs throughout Northern California and chooses sites based on access, quality and beauty. Currently MAS is running programs in Bear Valley, South Lake Tahoe (Lovers Leap, Phantom Spires & Sugarloaf), Calaveras Dome, Sawtooth Range (Matterhorn Peak & Incredible Hulk), Castle Rock State Park and Cragmont in the Berkeley Hills.

Rock climbing is a blend of strength, endurance, flexibility, and problem solving. People are often surprised at the subtleties of physical movement and mental focus. Often the thoughtful and creative climber is more successful than the taller or more powerful climber.

MAS specializes in high quality rock climbing programs with low student to instructor ratios. We feel that smaller courses maximize your opportunity to learn, share and excel. MAS strives to make every program “top-notch”, whether it be a long multi-pitch adventure at Lovers Leap or Boy Scout Merit Badge weekend in Bear Valley. We hope to see you out on the rock this summer!

MAS Mountaineering School in California
MAS strives to develop people’s skills in the mountains and appreciation for the alpine environment. Traveling comfortably and efficiently is a skill learned through experience and training. Knowing your goals and limits can lead to freedom in “wild places”. It is for this reason that MAS offers mountaineering training courses in Northern California.

California is an excellent region to learn, train and explore your mountaineering goals. MAS offers programs in Bear Valley, Mt. Lassen, and the Sawtooth Range west of Bridgeport on the eastside of the Sierra Nevada Range. Each of these areas offers unique mountaineering challenges and experiences.
• Workshops (1 day skills intensive)
• Seminars (2 day skills intensive)
• Camps (2 days skills & adventure combo)
Avalanche Education
MAS avalanche courses blend classroom and “on-snow” exercises to provide a thorough and “hands-on” understanding of avalanche hazards. MAS follows the standards set by AIARE (American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education) which is recognized internationally as the industry leader in avalanche education. MAS avalanche course participants benefit from our classroom that is literally a stones throw from the snow so little time is wasted when transitioning to the field portions. Overall MAS and Bear Valley provide the ideal setting for learning and honing your winter backcountry skills.

Skiing & Snowboarding
MAS and Bear Valley Mountain offer an exciting and unique experience for advanced skiers and snowboarders, as well as those just beginning. Small guided groups utilizing the “Bear Tracker Snowcat”, chairlifts and gravity fed traverses access “sidecountry” terrain adjacent to the ski area for great uncrowded and often untracked slopes. This is your opportunity to have the experience of a lifetime!

MAS also hosts California’s premiere telemark ski school dedicated to improving freeheel turns with professional and experienced instructors. It doesn’t matter if your new to skiing or an experienced alpine shredder, the MAS has a variety of programs to get you smiling on freeheel gear. All lesson include video analysis. The MAS Telemark Ski School operates at the Bear Valley Mountain Resort in Northern California and is home of the celebrated Bear Valley Telemark Ski Festival.
Guided Backcountry Snowshoeing
Hiking doesn’t have to stop in the winter. If you enjoy visiting wild places you’ll be thrilled to know that snowshoeing can be a fun, energizing and beautiful way to experience the marvels of backcountry winters. The relative ease of snowshoeing allows folks to venture into the winter wilderness without the required years of ski and snowboard training. Let MAS guide you efficiently and comfortably through spectacular winter scenery and experience for yourself the thrills of backcountry snowshoeing and backpacking in Northern California.

All MAS programs provide snowshoes, avalanche safety equipment and group gear as needed. Expect a blend of winter skills education, good exercise, plus time to enjoy the winter alpine environment.
