Operating out of San Diego, California, Family Kayak Adventure Center offers kayaking opportunities to everyone 2-years of age and older. No prior experience is necessary. We can also accommodate special needs.

3-hour Coronado Tour by Kayak on San Diego Bay
Here is an opportunity to view beautiful Coronado Island on San Diego Bay by kayak.
We’ll meet at Tidelands Park for an introductory paddling lesson and safety talk. Then we’ll launch our kayaks for a guided tour of the bay traveling under the scenic Coronado Bay Bridge.
We’ll paddle to the Ferry Landing pointing out various landmarks of the downtown skyline along the way. We typically get up close and personal to many shorebirds such as Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Willets and Spotted

Sandpipers.

3-hour Sea Lion Kayak Tour on San Diego Bay
Join us for this fun and exciting tour by kayak on San Diego Bay.

We’ll meet at Shelter Island for an introductory paddling lesson. Then we’ll launch our kayaks for a beautiful tour of the bay traveling toward Point Loma.
Along the way we’ll visit the bait barge where the local California Sea Lions hang out. We typically see many species of birds such as Brown Pelicans, Snowy Egrets, Double Crested Cormorants and Great Blue Herons.

The Chula Vista Wildlife Reserve has just been modified with new tidal creeks and channels which allow the rising tides to coarse through the area more efficiently and create new habitat for fish.
This new environment creates a great habitat for endangered birds such as the light-footed clapper rail, western snowy plover, California least tern, and thousands of migratory birds, as well as the eastern Pacific green sea turtle.
Our weekend dates have the perfect tides for exploring and our quiet, slow-moving kayaks will not disturb the turtles or the neighboring bird habitats.

Dog Paddle on San Diego Bay

Bring your 4-legged pals along for some fun and exercise on this kayak excursion across San Diego Bay.
After a brief session to get the dogs comfortable in the kayaks, and a quick paddling lesson for the humans, we will launch our kayaks to explore the Bay. After about an hour we land at the beach for a romp and playtime. After about 30 minutes of on-land fun we paddle back to our launch site.

Each session is 2 hours and is reserved just for you and your pup.

We do not do group sessions unless you have a group of friends and dogs that already know each other and get along.

We make it easy for you to join us on this paddle. We provide the kayaks, life vests and equipment plus an introductory paddling lesson. No previous kayaking or swimming experience is required.

We use stable, roomy kayaks that can accommodate any size dog. We can set up the kayaks for solo or tandem paddling. Each kayak can hold up to 500 lbs.

This tour is a great introduction to kayaking as well as a scenic nighttime tour of one of San Diego’s most beautiful playgrounds.
We launch during daylight and then paddle into the sunset while we watch the moon rise over the horizon.  Very exciting and romantic.
Highlights include a breathtaking view of the lights of downtown San Diego as well as the quaint village of shops at the Coronado Ferry Landing.

Nature Tour by Kayak at Lake Murray

Join us for a day of exploring Lake Murray, located in Mission Trails Regional Park just east of San Diego.
We see more different species of birds here than on any of the other lakes. Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons, Great Blue Herons, and Night Herons, as well as a variety of Swans, Ducks and Geese all make their home here. We also see migrating birds such as White Pelicans and Canada Geese here in the winter. Bring your binoculars and see how many different species you can find.

Join us on this fantastic adventure down the Baja peninsula on the Sea of Cortez.
The journey on Highway 1 starts out along the beautiful Pacific Ocean coast, then turns inland through the mountains and becomes unique cactus country. The huge Cardon cacti and strange Cirio “Boojum” trees are really unique to this area and create a stunning contrast to the beautiful blue of the Sea of Cortez.

Let’s get out of town and celebrate the outdoors in this beautiful desert oasis at Guadulupe Canyon Hot Springs
There is no kayaking on this trip, just a great time of hiking, Indian rock art, and hot tubbing (clothing required).
The desert is warm and sunny but not too hot Fall through Spring so it is the perfect time for exploring.
Our campsite has its own private hot tub overlooking the canyon.

Laguna San Ignacio: Whale Encounter and Taste of Baja

Have you ever actually touched a whale? Here is the opportunity to really do it. The whales are comfortable with the Mexican fishermen so they come right up to the boats for some gentle head rubs. They really do want to communicate with us.

San Quintin Bay, Baja California

Join us in exploring this Pacific bay only five hours south of San Diego.
We will camp on the beach of the outer bay and take day paddles to explore the historic features and unique geography of this area. From pristine white sand beaches to volcanic tide pools, there is plenty of exploring to do here. We will be sharing the bay with many varieties of marine mammals, birds and fish. Sea lions and dolphins play in both the inner and outer bays.

Sierra de Juarez Mountains, Laguna Hanson, Baja California

Join us on this unique adventure to discover one of the high plateaus of Baja just a few hours south of the U.S./Mexico border.
The Sierra de Juarez mountain range is a land of cool mountain air and remote primitive camping. In the heart of this rugged region is a small mountain lake named Laguna Hanson, surrounded by tall ponderosa pines and unusual rock formations. We will leave San Diego on Saturday morning and drive down a beautiful stretch of the Pacific Coast to Ensenada. Then we head inland into the Sierra de Juarez mountains.

It helps if you are already comfortable around the water, but you do not need to know how to swim.
We provide properly fitting life vests for all shapes and sizes that are worn throughout the lesson.
We also provide different sizes of paddles for those short and tall, with small hands and large.

Kids Lessons

We make learning fun!
We offer private and small group lessons for your kids so we can really focus our attention on their needs and abilities. All kids are different but a child 10 and older is very capable of handling a kayak. It helps if the child is already comfortable around the water.
• We provide properly fitting life vests that are worn at all times.
• We also provide child size paddles that are light weight and fit in small hands.
• Our instructors are ACA certified kayaking instructors

Here is how our children’s classes work.
We provide the kayak, properly fitted life vest, and child-size paddle.
You bring one or more children down for their special kayak lesson on the bay. Mom and Dad can watch from shore or join in the fun as well. We charge only for the number of people on the water.
Each session is 2 hours and is reserved just for you and your group.

Here are some of the topics covered:
• Proper fit of a life vest
• Looking out for obstacles and other boaters

About Family Kayak

Based out of San Diego, California, Family Kayak Adventure Center offers private lessons, local nature tours and complete multi-day packages to Baja California, the Southwestern United States, Florida and Southeast Alaska. Touring the local area is fun and open to people from 2 to 102. We also accommodate people with special needs. Our mission is to provide kayaking opportunities to people of all ages with varying degrees of ability. We offer our out-of town trips for adults only, families or youth groups.

Marie Humphrey
An active kayaker, Marie Humphrey has been a trip planner and lead kayaker since 1995. As a Certified Kayak Instructor through the American Canoe Association, Marie’s knowledge of the San Diego kayaking area is second to none.  With a Wilderness First Responder (Advanced First Aid) certification through Wilderness Medical Associates, her abilities and training give her the drive to put safety and fun first for everyone.

Kayak Instruction

At Family Kayak Adventure Center we focus all our attention on your individual needs and abilities and that’s why we offer private lessons. If you don’t know how to swim that’s okay.  We can show you there’s no need for any apprehension because we will teach you the basics to be efficient and safe on the water. We understand that  everyone is different and learns in different ways. Properly fitting life vests are always worn throughout each lesson, as are the right size paddles to fit your height as well as your hand size. Everyone of all ages and abilities can learn to kayak!

Location

The Family Kayak Adventure Center office is located in San Diego, California. Please note that tours and lessons start from various locations throughout San Diego County, and not the office. We are not a walk-in facility and appointments are required. Please call (619) 282-3520 to schedule your kayak lesson or tour and choose your location before departure. San Diego tour locations include Coronado Island, Shelter Island, South San Diego Bay, Mission Bay, Lake Murray, El Capitan Reservoir, Lake Hodges, Lake Morena, Otay Lake and other beautiful places.
