ATS AdventureWorks is your key to outdoor exploration and excitement.  ATS Adventureworks is a licensed, permitted, and insured company with quality adventure-training courses built to fit the needs of anyone from a beginner to a regular climber.  Our courses will guide you through the basics of the sport, and bring you to the point that you can experience it on your own.

To suit the varying skill level of all our guests, we offer six different levels of canyoneering instruction, four levels of rock climbing instruction, and another four courses at our mountaineering school.  No matter if you’re a beginner that has never scaled a wall or experienced mountain climbing enthusiast, we’ll have a course that is perfect for your ability level.

Adventureworks offers one to two day guided rock climbing and canyoneering trips to great climbing locales in Los Angeles.  The ATS team will match your ability level to the proper group to ensure that you have the best experience possible.  Our staff’s 15 years of experience ensures your safety, and gives you the chance to experience the outdoors in a way few ever do.

Canyoneering takes place all over the Globe. Wherever you find a mountain range, you are likely to find technical canyon routes nearby. The ATS team will prepare you for a lifetime of canyon descents though our extensive course options. Upon successful completion of our courses, you will be able to take this sport into your own hands and conduct your own decents without the assistance of a guide.

Courses are offered in California, Arizona, Washington, and Utah.

Level 1 – Intro to Canyoneering
A great intro to the sport with a full day spent descending a local canyoneering route. We’ll cover gear, basic rope systems, and safety protocols, all while rappelling down waterfalls.

Level 2 – Anchors
Spend a morning learning all the basic anchor systems for canyoneering followed by an afternoon of building your own anchors while descending a technical route. Emphasis is placed on leaving behind safe and professional anchors while learning how to cautiously inspect and backup previously installed anchors.

Level 3 – Self-Rescue

This full day is spent learning how to help yourself when something goes wrong. Self-rescue is an integral part of any adventure sport and considerable time is spent on being prepared for what can happen. Depending on the location this course may take place inside or outside.

Level 4 – Intro to Advanced Rope Systems and Swiftwater

At this intensive two day course, you’ll have the chance to learn advanced rope systems and swiftwater rescue protocols specific to canyoneering. This course is only offered when the water is at the correct levels to create an optimal learning environment.

Level 5 – Group Rescue

This course is for the canyoneer looking to take their skills to a whole new level. A full day is spent at a ground school going over every rescue scenario and solution that we can imagine. On the second day, we’ll put it all to the test as we complete real time staged rescues during a technical canyon descent.

Mountaineering is the sport of climbing mountains. Unlike rock climbing, mountaineering is typically done by a group of individuals, often roped together as they do semi-technical ascents of large mountains either on just rock or snow and ice. The ATS Team enjoys exclusive access to the tallest mountain in Los Angeles County where we teach our courses as weather conditions permit. This is typically from November to March of each year.

Level 1 – Intro to Snow Camping

Our two day course which covers the finer points of snow camping is perfect for mountaineers looking to move into the world of snow or just backpackers wanting to enjoy the beauty of winter camping….

Level 2 – Intro to Mountaineering

This is a great course for those wanting to learn the basics of mountaineering for a future of moutain ascents. We spend a long day learning basic rope travel, ice axes and crampon use including self-arrest techniques, the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), safe travel techniques through snow and scree, and basic mountain navigation.

 Level 3 – Intro to Snowshoeing
Come explore the snowy landscape as we learn all the basics of showshoeing in this full day course. Participants can expect to hike 2-3 miles at altitude in snowshoes. We’ll cover safe travel tactics, rescue options, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Level 4 – Mt Whitney Mountaineer’s Route Prep
This is a great course for those training to tackle the mountaineer’s route at Mt. Whitney or any of the other semi-technical introductory mountain routes in the Western United States. We focus specifically on the skillsets, group tactics, and PPE needed for the tallest mountain route in the lower 48 states. Please note this course does not in fact take place on Mt. Whitney but rather on the tallest mountain in Los Angeles County – Mt. Baldy

The ATS Team offers the most empowering rock climbing school in the Western United States. We will provide you with the skills needed to be out on your own in the safest environment possible.  Our multi-level courses will take you from a beginner climber to a lead climber. Finishing out the courses will allow you to enjoy Rock Climbing on your own without assitance our guidance.

Rock Climbing Intro Weekend

Our most popular program takes the beginner climber or gym climber looking to move outside and introduces them to the world of climbing. Expect a thorough introduction to the gear for climbing, the rating system, route finding, basic techniques, intro to anchors, and more.

Level 1 – Intro to Climbing

The Rock Climbing I Course is designed for total beginners or gym climbers looking to move onto real rock. These safe and fun courses focus on building a strong foundation of skills to start your climbing career

Level 2 – Anchors 1

The Rock Climbing II course is a beginner rock climbing top rope anchor building class. We will spend the first half of the day at an on-site ground school working on proper placements and equalization of rock climbing protection including: placing passive and active protection (spring loaded camming devices, stoppers, tri-cams, hexcentrics, etc.), route selection, top rope anchor site selections, & assessing and backing up fixed anchors. The remaining part of the day will be spent atop a cliff building basic anchor systems, and then climbing on the work we have done. We will finish the day with a rappel. If time permits, we’ll cover antique gear including broken and misused gear and anchors.

Level 3 – Anchors 2

The Rock Climbing III course is an advanced top rope anchor class designed as continued education from our Rock Climbing II class curriculum. Topics covered include complex anchor placements – both natural and artificial, complex anchor equalizations, complex master point extensions, and climber directionals. We also cover advanced belay skills, including top belays, bottom redirected belays, and climber raising lower out techniques.

Level 4 – Lead Climbing

This is a full-on lead climbing two day course. The purpose of this course is to educate and instruct a climber on how to safely step into the world of lead climbing. Topics covered include route finding and climbing topo map reading, rope management, gear selection and racking methods, how to protect a climb, proper placement techniques, establishing a belay stance, proper belay techniques, and how to follow and clean a leader. This class is taught with very few students (2-4) in order to encourage as much learning as possible.

Prior rock climbing experience is required.

Turkey and Techno

Turkey ‘n’ Techno is an annual event from Alpine Training Services. A celebration in the desert with a great Holiday turkey meal on Saturday. There’s rock climbing, good food, camping under the stars, laughter, and tons of fun! Both days are filled with endless desert climbing. Turkey n’ Techno is open to anyone that digs climbing and likes having an awesome time with friends.
